Every summer in Ontario, there are approximately 15 million pounds of strawberries grown. (Ontario, 2019). Therefore we can see these luscious small berries in many places; in supermarkets, farmers' markets, or even convenience stores around the corner. The bright red colour and juicy texture of strawberries are so tempting that please our eyes and taste bud. In France, strawberries are believed to be aphrodisiac, and they served as sweet soup for newlyweds. As romantic as you can imagine, strawberry belongs to the rose family.
What is so interesting about strawberries? It is cultivated in the 13th century for use as a medicinal herb. (Ontario, 2019). Not surprisingly, strawberry is the only fruit that wears its seeds outside. From a botanical view, strawberry is an aggregate fruit or accessory fruit. Meaning the fruit is developed from a single flower with multiple ovaries. Nutrition-wise, it's low in calories and high in vitamins C, B6, K, fiber, folic acid, potassium, and amino acids.
